Balrog of Morgoth : Playable 3D Character with Custom Rig & Animations
(Work In Progress)
For a while now I've been working on a personal project, with the task of learning how to build an Unreal Engine 5 scene and to setup and implement a playable character with a custom rig and animations. I wanted to base the project on a theme that I like, which would make learning and practising more fun. That's why I chose to base it on my favourite franchise and trilogy of all time 'The Lord of the Rings' and on one of the most badass villains and creations of J.R.R. Tolkien ; The Balrog of Morgoth.
The Sculpting and Modeling stages were done using Zbrush and Blender, and the custom Rig and Animations were again done in Blender. The textures were made in Substance Painter and the Fire Simulation was made in UE5 using the niagara system.
So far while working on this project, I have developed my UE5 scene setup skills, along with creating character and animation blueprints, fire simulation, implementation of a custom rig and animations, creating a sprint function, a zoom in function, camera free-roam function, sprint function, landscape material setups, lighting, foot tracking function (snapping on terrain surface depending on levetation), environment building and more.
This is still a Work in Progress and my goal is to potentially add NPCs that you, as the Balrog, can fight with basic attacks and maybe to implement somekind of a health system. I want to finalise the environment as it is still at a very early stage in development, but I will keep updating you guys with the progress as such is made.
Thanks and I hope you guys like what you see. Let me know what you think.
Do you have any suggestion for the project?
Would you like to see this as a video game?
